Poe Springs

Poe Spring on the Sante Fe River

Poe Spring

Description:

Poe is the first spring you’ll encounter on CR-340 (Poe Springs Rd) when leaving the town of High Springs heading west. Next is Blue Spring and then Ginnie Springs, all within about 5 miles of each other along the Sante Fe River. Of all three springs, I visited Ginnie Springs first. It took me a few years of visiting Ginnie Springs before I finally decided to visit the other two. Ginnie is just that nice, it was hard for me to imagine that either of these would be nicer.

While I really liked neighboring Blue Spring, Poe was not all that impressive. In fact, we were the only people here when I visited in September of 2009. The water was a greenish color, and did not have the same level of clarity as other springs I’ve been to. The pool is about 75 feet in diameter, with a small run leading into the Sante Fe River. The run is about 30 feet wide and flows around 150 feet before reaching the Sante Fe. Around the edges, the water is shallow, maybe 3 feet deep. There is a sharp drop off about 20 feet away from the concrete walls. Here, the depth reaches about 20 feet.

Poe Spring meets the Sante Fe River

Maybe I just visited this spring on a bad day, after some rain or some other factors, but I would not go back, especially considering the close proximity  to many other amazing springs such as Ginnie, Blue, Little River, and Ichetucknee.
