Ichetucknee Springs

Description:

Ichetucknee Spring is located in Ichetucknee State Park, about 4 miles NW of Ft. White. There are many things to do within the park, including tubing down the Ichetucknee River. This is a very popular thing to do here, so arrive early and avoid weekends and holidays. Inside the park, there is also Blue Hole Spring and Ichetucknee Spring, which is what I will be discussing here.

Ichetucknee Spring is accessed by the North entrance to the park. This flow from this spring creates the Ichetucknee River, which flows south and eventually dumps into the Sante Fe river about 6 miles away. I would have loved to visit this spring without the crowd, but that is a rarity in such a popular place.

The spring is a oval shape about 100 feet by 60 feet or so, situated about 20 feet below the parking lot level. The water is very clear and blue, but with the all the swimmers it is much less impressive than it would be if you had the place to yourself. The depth is around 25 feet at it’s deepest, but is around 6-10 feet deep throughout most of the pool. The water flows from a limestone opening on the northwestern end. This spring is great for snorkeling and swimming in general.
